Definition Albedo is ratio of the light received by a body to the light reflected by that body. Albedo values range from 0 (pitch black) to 1 (perfect reflector).
Technical Definition Geometric albedo is the ratio of a body’s brightness at zero phase angle to the brightness of a perfectly diffusing disk with the same position and apparent size as the body.
Examples Our Moon has a very low albedo (0.07), while Venus has a high albedo (0.60). The albedo combined with the absolute magnitude can help determine the size of an asteroid. https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/glossary/albedo.html @nasa-jpl orion! @podaac @lacountyDPH @BLACKGIRLSCODE The Global Albedo of the Moon at 1064 nm from LOLA https://ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20140017658
The albedo and photometric function of the moon have been measured between 121.6 and 168.0 nm by comparing the brightness of the moon, observed with an orbiting far-ultraviolet spectrometer during the Apollo 17 mission, to the solar brightness observed simultaneously from a sounding rocket. The instruments were carefully cross-calibrated. In contrast to what is found in the visible and the near ultraviolet, the brightness of the moon is found to increase toward shorter wavelengths; the moon is ‘blue’ in the far ultraviolet. This is confirmed by a laboratory study of lunar samples. A brief review of lunar albedo measurements in the 120-600-nm range is given. @nasa-jpl is this a jupyter notebook cut off by a Hollywood hotshot? now I’m ashamed of you all bc there is a movie called moonfall @nasa-pds @blackgirlscode https://youtu.be/JsK-ff2Mycg?si=RTd2GJacvVNjVFQq NASA’s MoonFall mission will blaze a path for future Artemis missions by sending four highly mobile drones to survey the lunar surface around the Moon’s South Pole ahead of astronauts’ arrival there.
MoonFall is built on the legacy of NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter. The drones will be launched together and released during descent to the surface. They will land and operate independently over the course of a lunar day (14 Earth days) and will be able to explore hard-to-reach areas, including permanently shadowed regions (PSRs), surveying terrain with high-definition optical cameras and other potential instruments.
Each vehicle will be capable of several propulsive flights, covering up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) total.
The mission was announced as part of the agency’s “Ignition” event on March 24, 2026. Learn more at https://www.nasa.gov/n…

June 9, 1995 Clementine was a joint project between the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization and NASA. The objective of the mission was to test sensors and spacecraft components under extended exposure to the space environment and to make scientific observations of the Moon and the near-Earth asteroid 1620 Geographos. Clementine was launched on 25 January 1994 at 16:34 UTC (12:34 PM EDT) from Vandenberg AFB , California aboard a Titan II G rocket. After two Earth flybys, lunar insertion was achieved on February 21.
